Bluff House

Inspired by the simple gabled farm building in the area, the house and garage of the Bluff House were designed and organized to create a protected and private outdoor courtyard and living space. Here, traditional and contemporary styles converge into a graceful, enduring design that is both relaxed and distinctive. Efficiently utilizing 2700 finished square feet of living space, the home features 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an expansive kitchen/great room, a large mud room and an office. In addition, a 500 square foot courtyard connects the home to a spacious 1100 square foot detached garage. Meanwhile, the built-in grill station with sink and refrigerator, the flat screen TV, overhead gas heaters and fire pit provide an appealing level of comfort and utility. Moving though the house, the spaces of the home transition from the more public living spaces near the street and entry to the more private bedroom wing at the back of the site. The interior material palette was designed to be timeless and restrained with dark walnut floors in the living spaces and bedrooms, elegant walnut cabinets, stone tile and full height glass shower walls in the bathrooms.

The Manzanita

WHAT DO YOU do if you want an ultra-modern house with an ultra-traditional sense? That is the question that confronted Jeff and Natalie, two 40-something professionals that wanted to build a fun, unusual living space atop a lookout minutes away from where they like to shop and near the homes of friends. Their answer: The “something old, something new” home. The home looks like a photo from a catalog and that’s no mistake. This home is designed by Joni Vilhauer, owner of Modeo. From the street, the simple lines and traditional entrance help it to blend into its neighborhood. The front entranceway prepares you for the natural presentation of the home. “We wanted to create an open space, and do something really fun and interesting on the inside,” says the home’s designer, Joni Vilhauer. For this home, there is a mezzanine for the kids to do homework and snack. You’ll note unfinished concrete, giving an industrial feel yet much like within an art gallery or library. Huge glass windows offer impressive views in every direction. “It’s pleasant to be here,” say the owners. There is private space too. For Jeff, there is a place away from the main area of house that includes its own patio and utilizes the underground air tem- perature to keep the space comfortable. Like many men, he is interested in new technology, but requested the technology to be sustainable. The owners say the home is sealed so tight it is “almost too quiet” – and they can’t hear the birds outside. The home achieves a balance between the heat generated by the sun, its occupants and is equipped with a heat-recovery ventilator that brings in air from the outside. One of the homes most unique features includes a barn door to create a yesteryear feeling. There is also a staircase with stone and hardwood that sets the home apart from any other.

Prepare a meal on the gourmet appliances as your family and friends gather and converse around the large kitchen island or take it outside to the covered patio complete with a built in BBQ. Enjoy the view and a delicious meal in the dining room as you take in the warmth and glow from the two-sided fireplace.
